Another potential project for Rooney! And it’s another big one.
Joel Edgerton out, Rooney Mara, Tom Hardy and more in for Kathryn Bigelow’s “Kill Bin Laden”?
Australian actor Jason Clarke is the first actor to officially sign on for Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to 2009′s Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker”, an untitled film about Navy SEALs involved in the killing of Osama Bin Laden, according to Deadline. This is curious, though, because we’ve thought all these months that Clarke’s “Great Gatsby” co-star Joel Edgerton had been set for the lead. It appears Edgerton is now out, perhaps a consequence of his increasingly busy shooting schedule, and Clarke is in. Others who are being eyed for supporting roles include Tom Hardy, Rooney Mara, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Ehle, Idris Elba and Nina Arianda.
The film is currently untitled but had been known under the working title of “Kill Bin Laden.” Clarke will play the leader of a special operatives group on the self-explanatory mission. Though the initial idea was to chronicle a real-life 2001 mission to kill the now-deceased Al-Qaeda leader that ultimately failed, the film will now include the actual killing of Bin Laden following his fate in real life. It’s curious to see so many actresses being eyed for roles, as the actual Navy SEALs themselves will surely be comprised of all guys. Could such talented actresses – who seem to number the men just about equally – be relegated to love interest/worried wife status? Perhaps in a lesser director’s hands, we need to be more worried.
Clarke appears to have a bit of a breakout moment on the horizon as he appears in John Hillcoat’s “The Wettest County in the World”, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” and now Bigelow’s film. Mara is about to hit superstardom when David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” releases next month and she’s already working on her next project, Terrence Malick’s “Lawless” opposite Ryan Gosling. Hardy broke out in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” and is reuniting with the director on “The Dark Knight Rises.” He’s also somewhat of an Oscar dark horse for his performance in MMA family drama “Warrior.”

Seems like Rooney has a lot of projects up in the air right now, and here’s another to add to the list. Hopefully one of these sticks and we’ll get something official soon!
Rooney Mara sought for Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake opposite Josh Brolin
Rooney Mara goes to some dark and twisted places to play Lisbeth Salander for David Fincher’s English language adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, and without going into spoiler-filled details, she may find herself going even darker and even more twisted if this new report comes to fruition. Twitch Film reports Mara is being targeted to take on the female lead role in Spike Lee’s “Oldboy”, a remake of the iconic Korean mystery/thriller which stars Josh Brolin and possibly Christian Bale. While Twitch are quick to point out talks have not progressed to any official offers being made yet, they reported on Brolin’s likely casting at this exact stage in his talks with Mandate Pictures, so Mara’s deal could be cemented soon just as Brolin’s was.
The original film, directed by Park Chan-wook and based on the Japanese manga of the same name, revolves around a man – to be played by Brolin – who is held captive in a room for fifteen years without any knowledge of why. Upon his release, he begins a violent quest for answers and revenge and along the way falls for a young chef, renamed Marie for the remake, which is the role Mara would play. The plan is to begin filming in the fall when Brolin wraps up Ruben Fleischer’s “Gangster Squad.”
There was a lot of outcry and hesitation over Mara’s casting as Salander in Fincher’s “Dragon Tattoo” last summer, but many fears were calmed when “The Social Network”, Fincher’s 2010 masterpiece, was released and Mara’s acting chops were on full display in a scene-stealing supporting turn. Unsurprisingly, Fincher’s discovery has led Mara to bigger and better projects, recently being shortlisted for the likes of David O. Russell’s “The Silver Linings Playbook” and Terrence Malick’s untitled next feature. The one she may have landed is Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes biopic, though there’s no telling when that production may be kicked off. For now, her future remains wide open and brighter than ever.

Holy crap, another major magazine cover for Rooney?! After her amazing W cover spread, it looks like the fashion industry wants more of Rooney. Rumors have her taking the highly coveted cover of Vogue magazine this winter, and perhaps Vanity Fair sometime as well?!
Super-fast rising star Rooney Mara, who stars in Tatiana von Furstenberg and Francesca Gregorini‘s debut film Tanner Hall (in which a character is named after yours truly, natch) is also the lead in that major movie called…The Girl with the Dragon Tatttoo, based on that major book trilogy. We are overly obsessed with the trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – best editing and best tagline: THE FEEL BAD MOVIE OF CHRISTMAS. So we are not surprised that a little fashion birdie told us that Rooney would be on the winter cover of Vogue. She has already been on the cover of W. What could be next? Vanity Fair is our guess.
Just a rumor at this point but it would be really exciting if it turned out to be true!
This one isn’t a sure thing yet because there are scheduling details to be worked out, but Rooney is being considered for the female lead role in a new indie film called “Night Moves”, with Paul Dano and Peter Sarsgaard. Hope this or one of the other couple of movies she’s in contention for works out and we get some real news soon!
For her last effort, the uncompromising western “Meek’s Cutoff,” the growing cachet of indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt allowed the director to cast some bigger names than she had worked with in the past, nabbing Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano to pad out the ensemble. And the experience seems to have been a positive one for Paul Dano, as reps for the actor have confirmed with The Playlist that he is reteaming with Reichardt for the director’s next effort, the eco-terrorist film “Night Moves.”
The project was first revealed last week when Peter Sarsgaard confirmed he was also taking a role in the film. The picture is certainly a gear change for Reichardt, as the story will will center on three environmentalists (Sarsgaard, Dano and one unannounced actress) who are intent on blowing up a dam. Updated: “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” star Rooney Mara has been approached about the third female role, but there are many scheduling factors involved and she is not confirmed as of this time.

More high profile projects Rooney is in the running for!! Christian Bale is already attached to star in “Tree of Life” director Terrence Malick’s next movie and Rooney, along with three other young actresses, are the finalists for the female lead! Eeeeks. Good luck Rooney!
Four female up and coming actresses including Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska vying for Terrence Malick’s next project
A quartet of female up and comers – Mia Wasikowska, Clemence Posey, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennet – are all vying for the lead role in acclaimed director Terrence Malick’s next project, also starring Christian Bale, and due to start shooting in early 2012, Twitch are reporting.
Of the four female actresses in contention, Bennet is probably the least well known. Starring in 2008′s Marley and Me, she has since starred in little known films such as Arcadia Lost and Kaboom, and this could be quite the break out for her. Also perhaps, for Poesy, who since starring in the Harry Potter series has spent time acting in TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Richard II, and can next be seen in the adaptation of Sebastian Faulks Birdsong, with Richard Madden (TV’s Game of Thrones)
Wasikowska and Mara are probably the two most well-known names on Malick’s list. Mara, who broke out in 2010′s Oscar winner The Social Network, will next be seen in the small indie film Tanner Hall, before the huge promotional push begins for David Fincher’s adaptation of the worldwide hit book series The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, a role for which Mara beat out numerous other up and coming actresses.
For Wasikowska, who broke out in 2010 after starring Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and then the Oscar nominee indie drama The Kids Are All Right, an early 2012 production date may clash with several other upcoming projects she has – including Stoker, A View From A Bridge and an untitled project with director Jim Jarmusch and Jane Eyre co-star Michael Fassbender.
Malick is renouned for spending years shaping his work, and has created only four films between 1973 and 2010. Amazingly, over the next two years, he could well look to double that – following the release of The Tree of Life this past year, Malick has the already-filmed production starring Ben Affleck and Jessica Chastain looking for an early 2012 release, and now this untitled project – which will feature a smaller than usual cast, focusing on one pair of leads only.

Ahh, so proud of our girl! Just yesterday we heard Warren Beatty was meeting with her for his Howard Hughes biopic and today David O. Russell, director of last year’s “The Fighter”, is testing young actresses for the female lead in his next film, “The Silver Linings Playbook”, which Mark Wahlberg is already attached to star in. Rooney is among the group that also includes Elizabeth Banks, Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams and Kirsten Dunst. Good luck, Rooney!
The next few days may very well determine which actress gets the golden ticket to star in The Silver Linings Playbook, director David O Russell’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning comeback film, The Fighter.
The Weinstein Co. movie again reteams Russell with his Fighter star Mark Wahlberg in the story of a man who suffers from a mental collapse and is released from a health facility determined to find the silver linings in his life.
The hot Hollywood role of the moment is that of a depressed woman who, when her husband dies, goes on a sexual spree, even at the cost of her job. She befriends the man and becomes his love interest.
According to insiders, Russell is intensely screen-testing the following in-demand actresses in Los Angeles starting today and going into the weekend: Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough and Olivia Wilde.
Sources also say Jennifer Lawrence may be in the running as well but that is unclear.
Russell is eyeing an August start date.

This could be huge if it turned out to be true! Deadline reports Warren Beatty has met with Rooney (and others like Jack Nicholson, Andrew Garfield and more) to join the cast of the new Howard Hughes biopic he is directing and starring in.
Deadline told you Monday that Warren Beatty was getting behind the camera for the first time since Bulworth. Paramount and Beatty are keeping details under wraps, but here’s what I’ve heard: He will play Howard Hughes, but it’s not really a biopic; part of the plot involves an affair he had with a young woman in the later years of his life. I’ve heard that he’s going top shelf for the ensemble cast he is putting together. Here is who he’s meeting with: Andrew Garfield, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Shia La Beouf, Jack Nicholson, Evan Rachel Wood and Rooney Mara. Beatty has wanted to play Hughes forever. The courtship of Baldwin is particularly intriguing, since in Martin Scorsese’s superb Howard Hughes movie The Aviator, Baldwin played Hughes’ main adversary, Pan Am World Airways founder Juan Trippe. We’ll see which actors end up making the movie, but it certainly sounds like this project that Beatty wrote and has ruminated on for years is going to happen in a most ambitious way.

File this one under rumor for now since I can’t find any other source or confirmation, but Irish Central is reporting Vanity Fair is planning a Rooney cover for an upcoming issue!!! How freakin’ exciting would that be?! Really do hope it turns out to be true. But seeing as how they have a picture of Kate to accompany the article, I’m not convinced they are legit. We shall see…

We previously reported that Rooney was a lead contender for the role of Lisbeth Salander in the highly anticipated “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, and in the past few days more solid details have emerged. This seems to solidify Rooney as a front-runner.
According to various sources, including Entertainment Weekly, Deadline Hollywood and IndieWire, the team behind the movie is narrowing its search, and is down to five finalists consisting mostly of unknown actresses: Rooney Mara, Emily Browning, Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and an unnamed French actress, rumored to be Lea Seydoux.
The film also has an official release date of December 11, 2011 and Daniel Craig is still attached to star as the male lead Mikael Blomkvist.
We will keep you updated on Rooney’s involvement and hopefully there will be an official announcement soon!
Wow, this would be huge if it turned out to be true!! The Playlist is reporting that Rooney is the “secret” lead contender for the starring role in the highly sought-after “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. It does seem to make sense since it’s a David Fincher film and Rooney is said to be stealing scenes in his “The Social Network”. So exciting, we will keep you upated!!
Between the spammers and legit feedback we do occasionally get some solid tips that filter through… So when a comment appeared from a reader suggesting they had an in on the casting of ‘Dragon Tattoo,’ and mentioning that actress Rooney Mara — who’s got a key role in Fincher’s upcoming “The Social Network,” and was the lead in the recent “Nightmare on Elm Street” — was the frontrunner to play Salander we decided to look into it.
They wrote: “Rooney Mara is the secret lead contender… she steals her scenes in ‘The Social Network’ particularly the opening scene with Jesse Eisenberg. A safe bet for Fincher because this girl has to be in all THREE of the Dragon Tattoo movies…” We took this bit of info and ran Mara’s name up the flagpole with our sources, and they confirmed that the commenter was indeed correct, and she is indeed a contender for the role.
