A new look at Rooney and Daniel as Lisbeth and Mikael in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” on the cover of the new issue of British film magazine Empire. Lots of new stuff promised within the covers so be sure to check back for scans and pick up and issue for yourself!

Our Nev Pierce interviewed all those involved and visited the set to bring you all the latest on the film, but here’s just a taster of what Fincher had to say about Salander herself.
“There were discussions early on where people were like, ‘She’s a superhero!’ And you go, ‘No, she’s not. Superheroes live in a world of good and evil, and she’s far more complex than a superhero. She’s been compromised. She’s been subjugated. She’s been marginalised. She’s been swept into the gutter and she’s had a part in it. She dresses like trash because she’s someone who has been betraued and hurt so badly, by forces beyond her control, that she’s just decided to be refuse. She can sit anywhere she wants on the bus, because nobody wants to deal with her.”

Holy crap, another major magazine cover for Rooney?! After her amazing W cover spread, it looks like the fashion industry wants more of Rooney. Rumors have her taking the highly coveted cover of Vogue magazine this winter, and perhaps Vanity Fair sometime as well?!
Super-fast rising star Rooney Mara, who stars in Tatiana von Furstenberg and Francesca Gregorini‘s debut film Tanner Hall (in which a character is named after yours truly, natch) is also the lead in that major movie called…The Girl with the Dragon Tatttoo, based on that major book trilogy. We are overly obsessed with the trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – best editing and best tagline: THE FEEL BAD MOVIE OF CHRISTMAS. So we are not surprised that a little fashion birdie told us that Rooney would be on the winter cover of Vogue. She has already been on the cover of W. What could be next? Vanity Fair is our guess.
Just a rumor at this point but it would be really exciting if it turned out to be true!

EW has the deets on seating arrangements at this Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, and even though Rooney was conspicuously left off the “Social Network” ensemble cast list, it appears she might be attending and sitting with her co-stars after all. *crosses fingers* We’ll bring you full coverage if she does!
The Social Network: With a star-studded cast — Jessie Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara, Max Minghella, and Justin Timberlake — Network gets a prime spot right up front, to the left of the stage. Producers decided to put presenter and SNL alum Amy Poehler at the same table so she could be near fave SNL host Timberlake. Minghella is attending with actress Kate Mara (127 Hours), sister of Network‘s Rooney Mara.

In the next year, Rooney (younger sister of actress Kate) will star in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street and the comedy Youth in Revolt, but for right now, she’s focused on her humanitarian efforts. After traveling to Africa with a volunteer group, Rooney established the nonprofit Faces of Kibera to benefit kids in a small village in Kenya. “We’ve already been able to do so much,” she says. While most ingénues struggle to balance fame with a career, she seems markedly poised. “It makes you a better actor if you have real-life experiences that you can draw from.”—S.J-D.

Rooney is, quite deservedly, featured as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film for 2009. A new photo accompanies the article, which features some great new soundbytes from Rooney, and the magazine itself goes on sale at the end of July, though you can read the whole thing below. Check back for HQ scans when I get my copy.
Rooney Mara
The careers of actors and actresses are possessed of their own internal logic. An actor’s breakout in a critically acclaimed starring role is usually the culmination of a process that’s been witnessed by producers, directors and casting directors for years before. So when we surveyed people in the industry about acting talent for this year’s list, one not-yet-household name kept coming up: Rooney Mara. Said a casting director: “She’s got great presence and wit, and she can do both comedy and drama.” “Women love, guys love her,” one producer said to me. “We cast forever for her character, and she just came in and nailed it.” Audiences will have a chance to discover Mara’s talents because she has supporting roles in three independent or specialty films coming out this year. First she’s opposite Sam Rockwell in the Sundance pickup The Winning Season, she co-stars in Adam Salky’s Sundance Competition pic Dare, and she’s also in Miguel Arteta’s upcoming Youth in Revolt with Michael Cera.
